Hien's story

About Hien.
I studied biology in France and I speak fluently French, English and Vietnamese. I volunteered in France with children. I have never worked or volunteered in the UK. I have an 18-month-old son and I have been living in the UK for the last 2 years looking after my son. Now that my child is in nursery 2 days a week, I thought this would be my opportunity to start volunteering.
Why did you decide to volunteer?
I always take my son to Wapping or Shadwell Children’s Centres, and there I found out about an introduction to volunteering course. I found out about the other benefits of volunteering and got excited. Volunteering would help me gain more skills and get a paid job.
Who did the Volunteer Centre help you?
I went to the Volunteer Centre for an appointment. The adviser gave me an admin opportunity and contacted them on my behalf during the appointment. They wanted to meet me right away. I was so excited and I started volunteering the following week.
Who do you help through volunteering?
I have now started volunteering as admin and research volunteer at Fortune Forum. I am really enjoying the work. People are very nice and helpful. I am volunteering 2 days a week while my son is in nursery. I am gaining experience, confidence and meeting new people. It will also give me new reference which is vital to go back to employment.
Are you ready to get involved?
